Blurbs from around the web regarding Don Imus' Situation

....But now black-Jewish relations seem to be entering a more optimistic, if uncertain phase. The nomination of Joseph Lieberman, a Jewish senator from Connecticut, as running mate to the Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore, has proved an unlikely catalyst for a desire on both sides for greater understanding, if not reconciliation. Lieberman's nomination received the warm endorsement of the Reverend Jesse Jackson - once reviled in the Jewish community for referring to New York as "Heimie town". Lieberman in turn has extended an olive branch to the leader of the Nation of Islam, Louis Farrakhan - the man who branded Judaism "a gutter religion" and called Hitler "a great man". Farrakhan looks as though he may accept. "I would welcome a meeting... it could be a bridge between the black community and the Jewish community," he said.

....That's something I wonder about. I live in ultra-liberal New York City, and I speak to Jews that support Israel, and yet vote for a party that has a large membership of people who look to Farrakhan as a spiritual leader, to Jesse Jackson, who once referred to New York as "Heimie Town", and Al Sharpton, who once called Jews "interlopers". Nobody is more anti-semetic than Farrakhan, who demeans Jews and Zionists in the most disgusting way, and nobody prays for the destruction of Israel more than he does.

I find that the fringe left is largely anti-semetic and blames Israel for all of the problems in the world. Many of them say we went into Iraq because of the Jews, and many of these loons even claim that Israel was responsible for 9/11. Even that idiot, Cindy Sheehan, said that we sent our boys to die for Israel.

Who can explain why so many Jews vote liberal? With some, the idea of voting for anyone without a "d" after the name is unthinkable. One Jewish woman told me that voting democrat is almost like a religion; it's just something she was brought up with and has to do. I don't understand this.

I know that most Jewish people believe in getting a good education, but so many of the ones I know are pretty much in the dark when it comes to politics; or else, they prefer to be in the dark on this subject because otherwise, they might be conflicted.

....According to the US Bureau of Justice Statistics as of 2001, 16.6% of the entire US black male population was incarcerated in a Federal prison, compared to 7.7% of the hispanic male population, and 2.6% of the white male population (I'm guessing that they didn't bother with a calculation for people of Asian/South Asian descent, and what the heck is hispanic? I thought we had agreed on the universal term "latino(a)"?), http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/crimoff.htm.

Additionally, based on current trends, a black male in the united states has a 32% chance of being incarcerated in a State or Federal prison at some point during their lifetime, compared to 17% for latin males, and 5.9% for white males, http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/crimoff.htm#lifetime.

I consider homicide to be the most violent of all crimes. Just my anectdotal take on violence, but I think its valid. And again here in the USA, black males out perform whites. According to the same compilation of statistics in 2002, Blacks were 7 times more likely than whites to commit murder, http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/race.htm In correlation, blacks were also overrepresented as victims of homicide for the years 1976-2000 (see prior URL).

What does all of this mean? It means that blacks commit the vast amount of crime in the United States. Of those crimes, blacks are far more likelier than whites to commit murder. And when blacks do commit murder, they usually do so against other blacks.

....But just because it’s inexcusable doesn’t mean it’s inexplicable. And while Imus should not be spared any blame, we are undoubtedly complicit. It is our dubious taste that has spawned America's prevailing entertainment culture. We have countenanced the insult industry into which talk radio has devolved.

We have allowed humiliation to become a centerpiece of network TV programming. And we encourage cutting-edge humor, without much concern that women and minorities endure most of those cuts. These dubious entertainments all share one currency: unabashed delight in cruelty and debasement. And we the audience laugh and laugh and laugh until somebody hits us over the head and we realize—or somebody tell us that we should realize—that this time it was way out of line and actually not all that funny.

.... Ok, Imus screwed up...he is trying to apologize...Al won't let him....enough already Al...if you are so hopped up to get Imus and anyone else fired who screws up with a "racial" comment, well then....your mission is clear and just. JUST, make sure you get EVERYONE fired who makes a racial comment...like that commedian who gets the whole audience rolling on the floor with comments about that "cracker", "white boy", "whitey" or any other of the numerous slurs and comments used only to ridicule and humiliate those of that race.

THIS WHOLE THING IS GETTING OUT OF HAND! If Al goes after anyone for making racial comments, slurs or otherwise, then he has to go after EVERYONE.

NUFF SAID

.... I hope that on some level, Imus actually means the apologies. That it isn't all just arse covering. That this outrageous incident and the pressure that has come with it will cause him to soul search his true feelings about race.
Understanding that you harbor racist feelings, and being ashamed of it, is a good start towards dealing with it. Hopefully that's what will happen with him.

As for us, forgiveness isn't the worst thing in the world to contemplate.

.... Has anyone burned down the Rutgers Team Dorm since he made those stupid remarks?

Al "white-interlopers" Sharpton has got alot of balls.

.... In a joint statement, Myles Brand, the president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and Richard L. McCormick, the president of Rutgers, said Mr. Imus’s attempt at humor represented an assault on human dignity. “The N.C.A.A. and Rutgers University are offended by the insults on MSNBC’s Don Imus program toward the 10 young women on the Rutgers basketball team,” they said. “It is unconscionable that anyone would use the airways to utter such disregard for the dignity of human beings who have accomplished much and deserve great credit. It is appropriate that Mr. Imus and MSNBC have apologized.”
