Smithville, Mo.: Wondering what to do with that fresh cut Christmas tree now that the holidays are over? The Scotch pine or Douglas fir that looked so beautiful on Christmas Day can be put to good use and will help the environment, too.
Clay County Park Department offers a drop-off site for whole Christmas trees only at Little Platte Park at Smithville Lake. Please remove tinsel and tree bags. The site is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., until January 15, 2008. To drop off trees, take US 169 north to NE 180th Street; turn east; continue past the stop sign into Little Platte Park and follow the signs to the site.
In mid March, when memories of the holiday have all but faded, the Christmas trees will be used for crappie beds on the bottom of Smithville Lake. Adding and replacing habitat for crappie in Smithville Lake is an important part of fisheries management. It helps maintain crappie health and populations, which also benefit other lake inhabitants. AND area fishermen can reap the rewards of a more successful fishing trip later in the spring or summer. Volunteers will place the trees the third Saturday of March.
