Some Seek Utility Help As Weather Rule Expires
KCPL, MGE Urge Customers Behind On Bills To Set Up Payment Plan
Don't let warm temperatures lull you into ignoring winter utility bills. The cold weather rule will be lifted Wednesday, meaning that customers who are behind on their gas or electricity bills may have their utilities shut off.
This year, the end of the rule may affect more people than ever before.
KMBC's Maria Antonia reported that she found several people coming in to Kansas City's Bishop Sullivan Center, needing help with utility bills.
One such person was Laurie, who said she has a lot of anxiety about keeping her utilities current. She currently lives on $680 from disability payments. One of her bills is up to $450 and she's already on a payment plan for it.
There is a stack of forms for clients at the Sullivan center who are being helped. There have been 94 families signing up in the past month. Between them, they're getting help with nearly $14,000 in utility bills, mostly for gas.
The United Way in Kansas told KMBC that the number of people it helps with electric bills went up from nearly 4,300 in the first quarter of 2009 to more the 5,800 in the first quarter of this year.
Kansas City Power & Light is urging customers to establish a payment plan by calling 816-471-KCPL or 888-471-5275 before April 1.
Missouri Gas Energy has also posted assistance information online.
