Willing to work for food and kick off Earth Week? |
|
Kick-off Earth Week by helping to keep Liberty's water ways clean and free of pollutants. Elected officials, Liberty... For All stakeholders, and City staff are embarking on a storm drain stamping campaign on April 17 and are looking for volunteers to help with the project.
Volunteers will also be treated to a free lunch provided by Liberty Mayor Greg Canuteson and Councilmembers Jeff Moore, Jeff Watt and Paul Jenness.
Through this volunteer effort, older storm drains will be adorned with colorful stamps that remind people that water entering the storm drains flows directly into our creeks, streams and lakes with no treatment or cleaning process. When oil, cleaners, pet waste, paint, lawn chemicals and other dangerous products are poured or allowed to run-off into drains it degrades the quality of our water.
The markers also include a number to call to report accidental or intentional spills into drains. If spills are caught early enough, much of the damage to the water system can be avoided. Volunteers will affix the markers to the drains with a special adhesive and hang door hangers to remind area residents of the hazards of improper use of storm drains and the importance of keeping our waterways clean. Volunteers will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the fountain outside City Hall at 101 E. Kansas. Volunteers may want to bring work gloves, but all other materials will be supplied. Lunch will be provided for storm drain volunteers as well as Jewell neighborhood residents who will be conducting a neighborhood cleanup that day.
If you are interested in helping with the storm drain stamping initiative, email Mayor Canuteson at gcanuteson@ci.liberty.mo.us or call the City's Public Relations office at 816.439.4415. |
