Liberty Animal Control and Local Veterinarians Team Up to Reduce Pet Overpopulation

Liberty Animal Control and Local Veterinarians Team Up to Reduce Pet Overpopulation

With reduced price sterilizations available February 16-20, 2009, Liberty residents can help reduce pet overpopulation by spaying or neutering their dogs and cats.

During the week-long event, four area veterinary clinics will be offering a limited number of reduced price sterilizations as part of a cooperative effort with Liberty Animal Control to prevent companion animal overpopulation. For dogs, the reduced cost is $95, which includes spay / neuter as well as rabies and distemper shots and heartworm test. For cats, the reduced cost is $85, which includes spay / neuter and rabies and feline distemper shots.

These fees are approximately half of the full cost for these services.

Liberty citizens, with proof of residency, qualify for the discount. There are a limited number of appointments available. Interested persons should call one of the following veterinarians early to schedule.

- Ark Animal Hospital 781-4595

- Crossroads Animal Hospital 781-1510

- Northside Animal Clinic 781-3900

- Veterinary Center of Liberty 781-0778

This program is part of an advocacy effort for spaying and neutering of companion animals during "Spay Day USA 2009." Spay Day USA will celebrate its 15th anniversary on February 24, 2009.

Altering pets prevents the births of unwanted puppies and kittens, thus reducing the number of homeless animals. Liberty Animal Control works to return lost pets to their owners and to adopt out unwanted animals. By taking advantage of the reduced price sterilization program, Liberty citizens can help manage the stray pet population in their neighborhoods, and reduce the number of animals that must be euthanized each year.

For more information about the reduced price sterilization program contact Liberty Animal Control at 439.4790.

Citizens should also note that all dogs over the age of four months must be vaccinated against rabies and licensed with the City. Licenses are available at City Hall for $5.00 for a sterilized dog or $10.00 for an unsterilized dog. Licenses can also be obtained at all local veterinarians, who can add a $1 administrative fee. Proof of vaccination must be provided. The license tags must be displayed on the dog's collar at all times and are valid for one year.

If you are interested in adding a pet to your family, call or email the Liberty Animal Shelter at 816.439.4790 or aco@ci.liberty.mo.us or check out some of the animals available for adoption on the City's website at www.ci.liberty.mo.us/AdoptAPet.
