Lenexa Police Report

For the week ending 11-02-09 Lenexa officers investigated 264 incidents, conducted 59 street checks and field interviews, wrote 131 citations, and made 65 arrests, including six arrests for DUI and eight arrests for narcotics violations, three of which were for with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine.

PHYSICAL DISTURBANCES

It was a relatively quiet week for these types of crimes although that doesn’t diminish the severity of those that did occur. Cases were investigated following minor wrecks and verbal disagreements which escalated. In those cases prosecution was not desired by either party. In some of the domestic related cases we received reports in Wind River near 91st & Bell, Woodridge near 88th & Hauser and Oak Park Village near 96th & Monrovia. The Wind River case was reported three days after it occurred and after the alleged suspect withdrew money from the joint checking account. The investigation in that case is continuing. In Woodridge the initial report summoning officers was for a disturbance. As they entered the apartment they saw a quantity of controlled substance in plain view. They arrested a 36 year-old Kansas City, KS man who has a substantial criminal history to include crimes of violence and weapons. Lastly in Oak Park Village officers investigated a mutual domestic battery that started over an allegation of infidelity. Both the 21year-old husband and his 18 year-old wife, both of whom had minor physical injuries, were arrested.

BURGLARIES

Officers investigated several residential burglaries this week to include an unlocked residence in Manchester Park and forced entry into residences in Four Colonies, 92nd Pl & Rosehill, and 88th & Cottonwood. In the Manchester Park case the resident reported that a laptop was taken while in Four Colonies the suspect(s) entered the home by breaking a basement window and took a quantity of jewelry. On 92 Pl near Rosehill the resident reported forced entry through a sliding glass door and that his computer and assorted other equipment were taken. The circumstances of this case are unusual and detectives are investigating. Lastly in this category, a car break-in to a resident’s car in Kansas City where the resident’s address was found along with a garage door may have led to a later break-in on Cottonwood St. When the resident returned home she found a large theft had taken place.

Vehicle burglaries are a common occurrence and as usual the majority of them involved unlocked cars where easy-to-steal items left in plain view are stolen. This last week the items once again included GPS devices (Greystone) and radar detectors (Manchester Park). In cases where there was forced entry this week (broken windows near 95th & Alden and 116th & Renner) company trucks were entered and GPS devices and tools were stolen.

THEFTS

Recently, detectives from multiple area agencies including the local office of the FBI formed a task force to investigate an exceptionally active theft ring. This ring was substantial in size and several of the members were identified as dangerous career criminals. As the investigation progressed and cases were put together, the ring was effectively dismantled with the arrest of most of the members this last week. The investigations are continuing and judging by the charges being filed this group won’t be active again for quite some time.

We all know that ID Thefts and Frauds are committed at an alarming rate, and as we have said before the best defense to prevent these crimes is to be as vigilant as possible, always checking your statements for any irregularities. We had cases this week that were both local (when a 24 year-old stole and used his roommate’s debit card), and several cases where residents attempted to use their debit card, only to find that their financial institution had cancelled several thousand cards because their system had been corrupted. The non-local cases this week included residents’ personal information being used in Massachusetts to set up phone service and several cases in Florida for fraudulent internet purchases.

In some of the other theft cases besides the “normal” shoplifters, are a purse theft where the victim mistakenly left her purse at work overnight, a vehicle theft from 99th & Lackman (has not been recovered as of yet), a trailer theft from 79th & Marshall (it was recovered along I-70 in Kansas City) and a currency theft from a residence near 83rd & Allman. In this case a remodeler, a 23 year-old Kansas City, MO man, committed a felony theft when he stole a considerable amount of money from the home while left alone. That investigation is continuing.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

For the fifth time in four weeks a resident near 87th & Pine reports that his yard was “farmed” and his underground sprinkler heads were damaged. No other properties in the neighborhood are being damaged so it is obvious he’s being targeted for some reason.

Other CDP’s included two vehicle windshields of cars on Charing Cross Rd in London House that were broken by unknown suspect(s) using a large rock. One of the victims suspects an ex-boyfriend who she has been having problems with lately.

DIRECTED PATROL (DPU) UNIT

Continuing our efforts at combating prostitution, undercover DPU officers recently participated with other metro law enforcement agencies setting up prostitution stings. We know that prostitution is not a victimless crime and besides the prostitutes themselves the activity also brings other crimes to our town, frequently thefts and occasionally robberies. These stings were aimed at both the “johns” who responded to explicit internet ads, and the prostitutes offering their services. Our officers arrested 16 “johns” (15 metro area men and one from the Chicago area) ages 26 to 61 and one 22 year-old prostitute from Manhattan, KS. All face charges in Municipal Court.

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

We have always encouraged our residents and businesses to immediately call police when they see any suspicious or criminal activity. Some of the cases this week were at a tanning salon where a “customer” who staying an unusually long period of time that made the clerk very uneasy and a suspicious male loitering around an ATM after dark near 95th & Lackman.

WHAT WAS HE THINKING?

Earlier this year a 57 year-old Overland Park man was arrested for a DUI and Transporting Open Container. He did not appear in court as ordered and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. He recently appeared in court (intoxicated again at 1:30 pm) and the warrant was set aside to address the case when he could return sober. It was obvious that the man had driven intoxicated to court. He was given field sobriety tests and arrested for DUI.

The Police Department asks that anytime you see suspicious activity to please call 9-1-1.
