Attacker Seems To Be Targeting Waldo Area
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police said they're searching for a possible serial rapist who has been targeting women in the Waldo neighborhood.
Officers said two rapes over the weekend may have been committed by the same man who broke into homes and sexually assaulted two women in the Waldo area last fall.
Saturday night, a man broke a back window of a home in the 8300 block of Mercier Street and waited inside. When a 53-year-old woman returned home from work shortly before 10 p.m., he raped her, police said.
Another incident happened a few hours later and less than 2 miles away, in the 10 block of East Porte Cimi Pas. At 12:30 a.m., a man forced his way into the home of a 50-year-old woman when she let her dogs outside. The man sexually assaulted her and stole her jewelry, police said.
Previously, a woman was raped in the 7500 block of Summit on Sept. 29, 2009, and another woman was raped in the 100 block of East 78th Terrace on Oct. 11.
Police said they believe the man had been watching the women.
"We believe he was targeting these women, probably watching them for a little while to see their routine. I believe two out of four have boyfriends that stay there, and he picked the night the boyfriends weren't home. He might be casing these houses," Officer Darin Snapp said.
The victims described the attacker as a black man in his 30s who had a deep, smooth voice and he smelled like smoke. He is about 6 feet tall and 250 pounds. He is bald with pitted cheeks, possibly from acne scars. One victim said the man had bad breath and that his clothes smelled like exhaust fumes.
Police said they will increase patrols in the neighborhood. Officers remind residents to take precautions and to keep their doors and windows locked at all times.

Free Safety Seminar
Safety expert Tracey Hawkins has scheduled another self-defense seminar for residents. Hawkins organized three similar programs last fall after the first two rapes were reported.
The free seminar will cover personal safety and home security information.
It will be held at 8 p.m. on Feb. 1 at United Studios of Self-Defense, 122nd and State Line Road.
Kansas City Area had Over 68 Sex Related Crimes in the same 30 day time period.
