Cooling Centers Open To Help Beat Excessive Heat

Excessive Heat Warning In Effect Until 10 P.M. Wednesday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Several area organizations are reaching out to residents who are trying to stay cool during the heat wave that's settled over the Kansas City metro area.


Volunteers with the Salvation Army are out on the streets with a mobile canteen to distribute cold bottles of water to the homeless and individuals who are working outside.


The Salvation Army has opened its doors to give people a break from the extreme heat. All eight community centers across the metro are designated as community cooling shelters during the warning. The centers will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., including weekends. Cold drinks and light snacks will be provided.

In Wyandotte County, the Unified Government wants residents to be aware of cooling centers that are open during extreme hot and humid days. The cooling centers, their locations and business hours are:


The KCK LIBRARIES are open and available. People will be asked to use library resources while there and sleeping is not allowed. It is a great place to stay cool and have plenty to read.

The Johnson County Health Department, in cooperation with the Johnson County Library, encourages citizens who need a place to cool down to visit one of 13 library branches. All of these facilities will be available during normal business hours.

In Olathe, the city of Olathe Fire Department's Office of Emergency Management and Olathe Public Library announced the opening of two cooling centers. The centers offer people without adequate home cooling temporary relief from the extreme heat. Those who participate are encouraged to bring necessary, personal items like medicines, ready-to-eat snacks, etc.


The temporary centers are located at Olathe's two public libraries: Olathe Main Library (201 E. Park St.), Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., enter through the main entrance. Indian Creek Branch (12990 S. Black Bob Road), Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
