Emergency Management to display mobile command center at KC Remodeling Show |
KANSAS CITY, Mo.: Some may think of that new family room addition or kitchen cabinet replacement when they think of the annual Kansas City Remodeling Show, scheduled Feb. 6-8 at the American Royal Center, 1701 American Royal Court, Kansas City. The message of preparedness and safety, however, is on the minds of members of Clay County’s Emergency Management team, who will set up the mobile command center, among other equipment, as part of Safety City, a free exhibit at the Kansas City Remodeling Show.
“We will have our emergency mobile command center on display, along with equipment from other area emergency preparedness agencies, with the purpose of educating people about the things they can do to be prepared for disaster,” said Maj. D.C. Rogers, Director of Clay County Emergency Management. “People tend to think of disaster planning as a big communitywide effort, and it is. But, being prepared is also something people should do at an individual and family level, and we can help with that. The next disaster could affect an entire community, or it may affect only one household—for that one house, it’s still a disaster.”
The exhibit offers citizens an opportunity to talk face-to-face with the region’s emergency responders. “Emergency responders will be able to talk one-on-one with citizens and provide important information. For example, sirens are outdoor warning systems only and that every home should be equipped with a weather radio to ensure citizens receive notification to take cover when necessary,” Rogers said. “This is a regional effort to educate and inform citizens in the metropolitan area about how important it is to be prepared for all types of hazards, from tornadoes to terrorism.”
In addition to equipment and disaster preparedness information, interactive children’s displays will on be on exhibit. The exhibit is included with admission to the Kansas City Remodeling Show.
