Flotilla 30-1 of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering the About Boating Safely course at the Clay County Courthouse Annex, 1901 N.E. 48th Street in Kansas City, Missouri. This course will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2009 beginning at 9:00 am. The course itself is free with the only associated cost being $20 for the text book. Supplements are available for families and others who wish to share one text book ($5 per person). You must pre-register and can sign up by contacting us at (816) 682-6552.

About Boating Safely is a fun and comprehensive boating safety course that covers topics such as: Know Your Boat; Before You Get Underway; Navigating the Waterways; Operating Your Boat/PWC Safely; Legal Requirements; Boating Emergencies; and Enjoying Water Sports with Your Boat. Many insurance companies will offer discounts on boat insurance for taking and passing such a course. In addition, successful completion of the course, which has been approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, satisfies one of the prerequisites to obtaining a boating safety identification card from the Missouri State Water Patrol.

Students who take and successfully complete the About Boating Safely course are eligible to participate in an "On the Water" training exercise. Additional information about that training exercise, including the associated cost, is covered during the About Boating Safely course on April 18, 2009.

Missouri legislators passed a Mandatory Boater Education Law that went into effect on January 1, 2005. This law requires that every Missouri resident born after January 1, 1984 who operates a vessel on Missouri lakes must possess, on the vessel, a boating safety identification card issued by the Missouri State Water Patrol (along with a valid photo I.D.). In addition, this law requires any person convicted of various infractions while boating to enroll in and successfully complete a boating safety education course.

For more information about this course and the other services provided by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, call (816) 682-6552 or visit us online at www.cgaux.net.
