Lung association issues KC-area air quality report

The American Lung Association released its State of the Air report for six counties in the Kansas City area Tuesday.

The association gave letter grades to each county for ozone pollution and particle pollution. For the Kansas City area:

* Johnson County received a C for ozone pollution; the county received no grade last year for ozone pollution because data was not collected. The county received a C for particle pollution, compared with a B last year.

* Wyandotte County received a C for ozone pollution, unchanged from last year. The county received a D for particle pollution, down from a B last year.

* Clay County received an F for ozone pollution, unchanged from last year. The county received a B for particle pollution, unchanged from last year.

* Platte County received a C for ozone pollution, unchanged from last year. Data was not collected for particle pollution this year or last year.

* Cass County received a C for ozone pollution, down from a B last year. The county received a B for particle pollution, unchanged from last year.

* Jackson County data was not collected for ozone pollution this year or last. The county received a D for particle pollution, down from a B last year.

James Joerke, air quality program manager for the Mid-America Regional Council, based in Kansas City, said that the area is in attainment of the Environmental Protection Agency's standard for fine-particle pollution but that the area is expected to violate the EPA standard for ground-level ozone in the summer. The standard is based on a three-year average, and 2004 had an unusually cool summer and a resulting low ozone level, Joerke said.

"Clearly, there a number of days, primarily in the summer months, when we have air quality that is unhealthy," he said.
