LIBERTY MAP TESTING COMING SOON!

Soon, students across the district will have the opportunity to demonstrate what they know in the areas of math, reading, and science.  Students will be taking the following tests in the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) beginning the last week of March:

            Communication Arts                       Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

            Mathematics                                     Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

            Science                                                 Grades 5, 8

You, as parents, can help to make this experience a positive one for your child.  Please make sure that your child has plenty of rest, starts each day with an adequate breakfast, and is in attendance and on time each day for testing.  Please encourage your child to do his/her best. 

Your child(s) principal and or teacher will be sending home a MAP letter and schedule for MAP testing.  Thank you for all you do to help support your child during MAP testing.  If you have any questions regarding MAP testing please contact your building or the Curriculum and Instruction Department at 736-5320. 

 

SPRING BREAK COMING UP WEEK OF MARCH 15-19 
Don’t forget that Liberty Public Schools will be on spring break all next week, March 15-19.  Classes will resume on Monday, March 22.   Due to spring break next week, QuickNews will not be published.  QuickNews will resume on Wednesday, March 24.  We hope your families have a relaxing and SAFE spring break!



LAST DAY OF CLASSES TENTATIVELY SET FOR THURSDAY, JUNE 3 
As things currently sit, the last day of classes for Liberty Public Schools will be Thursday, June 3, 2010.  The last day of classes will be a 3-hour early release day.  This is subject to change if any more days are missed due to the weather.

LAST DAY TO REGISTER TO VOTE! 
The April 6 election is quickly approaching, and time is running out for you to register to vote if you have not already done so.  With three Liberty Public Schools Board of Education seats available, and the $8 million bond issue on the ballot, be sure to let your voice be heard.  Visit the following website (www.claycoelections.com) for more information on how to register.  The deadline for all Liberty Public Schools patrons to register to vote in the April 6 election is March 10, 2010 (TODAY).

LIBERTY JUNIOR HIGH ORCHESTRAS RECEIVE “SUPERIOR” MARKS 
On Friday, February 26 the Liberty Junior High Concert and Symphonic Orchestra participated in the MSHSAA middle school/Junior High festival.  The judges scored both orchestras with a “superior” 1 rating.   This year the orchestras have shown amazing rehearsal skills with an extremely high quality work ethic.  Congratulations LJH Orchestras!  

LADY JAY BASKETBALL TEAM FINISHES GREAT SEASON 
With Saturday’s loss to Blue Springs in the state quarterfinals in Warrensburg, the Liberty High School Girls Basketball Team saw their season come to an end.  But led by first year head coach Mike Morley the Lady Jays had a tremendous season highlighted by the school’s first conference championship since the 2003-04 season.  The team had an overall record of 22-7.  Early post-season honors already have Maddie Mason named District Player of the Year and Jenna Turner 1st Team All-District.  Congratulations Lady Jays!



BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYERS NAMED TO ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM 
Congratulations to Liberty Boys Basketball Player Denton Koon who has been named to the Suburban Big 7 Conference First Team.   Also gaining conference recognition were J.T. Nixon, Bryan Adams, Marshon Norfleet, and Jordan Lewis, who were named Honorable Mention All-Conference.  

ANNUAL LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL BLOOD DRIVE ANOTHER HUGE SUCCESS 
The annual Liberty High School Blood Drive, under the guidance of LHS teacher Rick Knowles, was yet another huge success on Thursday, February 11, 2010.  The event benefited the Community Blood Center and saw 503 students, faculty, and community members came out to donate with 388 units of blood raised.  This was a new single day record for both Missouri and Kansas!  A media crew from the CBC filmed a promotional video during the LHS drive and will be used throughout Missouri and Kansas as a model of a successful drive.   A special ‘thank you’ to all of the generous sponsors who made this yet another memorable event!

SOUTH VALLEY BANDS RECEIVE TOP RATING AT CONTEST

The 8th and 9th Grade Bands from South Valley Junior High each received a “I” Superior Rating at the Greater Kansas City Junior High Band Festival.  The event was held on Saturday, February 27 at Truman High School.  Junior High and Middle School Bands from all over the metro area performed two pieces for a panel of three judges and were given an overall rating of (I) Superior, (II) Excellent, (III) Good.  The SV Bands will now be gearing up for their annual Spring Concert and Solo and Ensemble Contest.  The groups are under the direction of Shane Fuller.

 

LIBERTY CHEMISTRY STUDENTS TAKE FIRST AT NWMSU
On Friday, March 5, Liberty High School sent beginning and advanced chemistry students to Maryville, Missouri and the campus of Northwest Missouri State University.  The field included 274 students from four states and 24 schools.   Liberty students won the team championship in both Beginning and Advanced Chemistry categories. Individuals finishing first or second receive scholarships to NWMSU.  Liberty had three scholarship winners.   In the ‘Beginning Chemistry Division’, LHS won the school championship with Sophomore Bradley Dice winning 1st place and sophomore Rachel Chapin taking 2nd.  In the ‘Advanced Chemistry Division’, LHS also won the team title with senior Fabian Gonzalez winning the individual championship.  Awesome job chemistry students!

LIBERTY ROBOTICS HAS SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND AT GREATER KANSAS CITY COMPETITION                                                               Congratulations to the Liberty Robotics team for winning the Judges Award this past weekend at the Greater Kansas City FIRST Robotics competition.  The team received the Judges Award for its continual support of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Programs, outreach to the community and its involvement in hosting engineering workshops for other metropolitan teams.  Team 1764 will be competing in the North Star Regional, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during the first weekend in April.  To view their website click on the following link: http://www.liberty.k12.mo.us/hs/libertyrobotics/   Also, to view photos from last weekend’s event at Hale Arena, click on the link provided:   http://www.liberty.k12.mo.us/news/photo-gallery/2009-2010/new-event

LHS STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR SPEECH AND DEBATE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

Five students qualified for the National Forensics League National Tournament being held in Kansas City.  This year the qualifiers were Matt Filla, Lincoln Douglas Debate;  Connor Hickox/Zac Lester, Public Forum Debate; and Eric Luan/Taylor Watson, Policy Debate. Students must place in the top 3 or 4 in order to qualify to the national tournament.  The NFL qualifying tournament continues this weekend at Park Hill South High School with the public speaking and interpretation events.  Liberty hopes to add more qualifiers from this event.

 

UPCOMING EVENTS

THE ITALIAN DINNER RETURNS SUNDAY, MARCH 14TH
Make plans to attend the Italian Dinner, which returns to the Liberty High School Cafeteria on Sunday, March 14.  This year’s event runs from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.  Cost is $5; with children 6 and under free.  Money raised from the Italian Dinner will benefit local students and adults in need along with other organizations that support people who are in need both local and national.  This year Italian Dinner deliveries will be made to those locally in need if they will call Liberty High School in advance before the end of the day on March 12.  You can call Dee Ann Gaskins at 736-5349 to place the order.

3rd ANNUAL BARRETT WEPLER BASKETBALL CLASSIC
The 3rd Annual Barrett Wepler Basketball Classic will take place Friday, March 19, through Sunday, March 21, at Liberty Junior High.  The tournament will have separate brackets for boys and girls in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and high school.  The team fee is $175 with a three game guarantee.  The purpose of the event is to honor and celebrate the memory of former Liberty Blue Jay basketball player Barrett Wepler.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Barrett Wepler Scholarship Fund.  If you have any questions regarding the tournament, contact director Terry Barmann at 816-809-2953 or email barmann@nwmissouri.edu

SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATE FORUM
The Liberty Council of PTAs will host a school board candidate forum Thursday, March 25, at 7 p.m. at the District Administration Center.  Please plan to join PTA leaders from our community to hear directly from the candidates as to how they will lead our district, if elected.  The forum will be broadcast on Channel 18 in the days following the event.  If you have specific questions you would like the candidates to answer during the forum, please direct them to PTA Council President Deb Loomis at debloo@kc.rr.com.      

MANOR HILL PTA FUNDRAISER
Manor Hill PTA’s cookie dough fundraiser continues until March 12.  There are 10 different flavors in 2.7 lb. tubs or pre-portioned packs.   Tubs are $12; pre-portioned packs are $14.  Please contact Megan Watt at mhcookies@hotmail.com if you would like more information or would like to place on order.  Cookie dough will be delivered in April.  Help our kids get WILD about cookie dough, and thank you for your support!  

HELP SUPPORT LIBERTY’S SCHOOL ORCHESTRA PROGRAM
On Thursday, March 11, you can help support your Liberty school orchestras and Liberty Orchestra Booster Club as Godfather's Pizza will be donating 20% of each purchase made between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. if you mention Liberty Orchestra Boosters.  Dine in or carry out is available.

 

LIBERTY MIDDLE SCHOOL FUNDRAISER
Liberty Middle School is selling trash bags and reusable, earth-friendly shopping bags for their spring fundraiser.  There are three different sizes of trash bags for all your spring clean-up jobs.  Each roll is $10, and orders are being taken until March 10.  “Liberty Families Care About Our Planet” reusable shopping bags are currently available for $3.  You can go to the LMS website for an order form (lms@liberty.k12.mo.us).

LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT
Mark your calendars for the semi-annual Liberty High School Newspaper Dodgeball Tournament!  Tournament will be Thursday, April 8, beginning at 6 p.m. Prizes awarded to 1st and 2nd places, as well as Best Team Uniform.  Cost is $5 per person, with up to 7 people on a team. Teams can be co-ed and can be all different ages. Tournament consists of 3 preliminary rounds, followed by a single elimination tournament bracket. Cost to watch is $3 per person.  All proceeds go to support the printing of the LHS newspaper, The Bell.  New this year:   A “mini” Dodgeball game for kids under the age of 10.  If interested or have questions, please ask any Bell staff member or email Jennifer Higgins at jhiggins@liberty.k12.mo.us

LIBERTY SAPPHIRE TRYOUTS
Tryouts for the 2010-2011 Liberty Sapphires squad will be held April 6, 7, 8, and 9 from 3:45-5:15 p.m. in the Liberty High School gym.  Incoming freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible for the Sapphire dance team.  A tryout informational meeting will be held Tuesday, March 30, at 6 p.m. in the Liberty High School cafeteria.  Those auditioning, and their parents, are asked to be in attendance at the tryout informational meeting.  Please note that students will need to have a copy of their current physical in order to participate during the week of tryouts.  Please contact Coach Maggie Willis mwillis@liberty.k12.mo.us or Coach Brandi Yates byates@liberty.k12.mo.us if you have questions.  Please note:  Auditions for the Liberty North High School pom squad will be held at a later date.  Information for these tryouts will be posted soon.

 

MISSOURI CHILD IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM
No one wants to think that the unimaginable could happen to them, but according to statistics, nearly 2,000 children are reported missing or abducted each day in the United States.  Gathering all of the information law enforcement officials need after the fact can be a daunting task, especially under duress.  According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC.ORG), a current good quality photo is the single most effective tool in locating a missing child.  The NCMEC encourages parents to be prepared by assembling their child’s photos and vital information ahead of time.  MOCHIP is a comprehensive child identification program designed to give families of a measure of protection against the ever increasing problem of missing and abducted children.  Locally, this event will take place on Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Liberty Middle School (1500 S. REMINDERS

Message to Parents:

 

Liberty Public Schools is moving forward with plans for the 2010 summer school program; however, the Missouri General Assembly is currently reconsidering funding for summer school due to the state budget crisis.  Should the state eliminate funding for summer school, Liberty’s summer school program would need to be significantly modified.

FOR STUDENTS ENTERING KINDERGARTEN–GRADE 8 IN THE FALL OF 2010 – Enrollment brochures containing details about the summer program are available at buildings and on the district website.  Dates for K-8 are June 7-30. 

 

STUDENTS K-8 WISHING TO RECEIVE DISTRICT-PROVIDED TRANSPORTATION MUST BE ENROLLED BY APRIL 20.  Students may still enroll after this date, but will not be eligible for district-provided transportation.

 

FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 9-12 IN THE FALL OF 2010 – Enrollment forms are now available at Liberty secondary schools.  Brochures will be available both online and at secondary buildings.  Parents may enroll using the printable form online or by completing the form at the back of the brochure.  Dates for 9-12 are June 7 - July 2.

2010-2011 KINDERGARTEN ENROLLMENT
Remember to enroll your upcoming kindergarten student now!  Enrollment for 2010-2011 kindergarten students will continue through March 22, 2010; however, we encourage you not to wait.  You can beat the rush and enroll your child now by taking two (2) proofs of residency (gas, electric, and/or water bill), your child’s birth certificate, immunization record, social security card, and names and phone numbers of emergency contacts to the Centralized Enrollment/Welcome Center at the District Administration Center, 650 Conistor, Liberty, between the hours of 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.  For more information, call 736-5310 or visit our website at http://www.liberty.k12.mo.us/parents/student-enrollment-information.      

    

Extended Enrollment Opportunities – The Centralized Enrollment Center will be open for extended hours, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., March 10 and March 24, to accommodate parents who work during the day. 

 

BOWL-A-THON TO TAKE PLACE APRIL 10

Liberty Academy's 12th Annual Bowl-a-thon to benefit the American Cancer Society will be April 10th from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. at Retro Bowl.  For $15 each bowler receives two games of bowling, a t-shirt and a door prize!  If you are unable to bowl, but would like to donate, we are in need of door prizes and silent auction items. SOUTH VALLEY JUNIOR HIGH TEACHER PERFORMS AT STATE CAPITOL

South Valley Junior High Band Instructor Cindy Svehla was invited to perform clarinet on a premier work commissioned for the Missouri Verses and Voices Concert in the Rotunda at the state capitol in Jefferson City February 9th.  Verses and Voices is a new educational initiative focusing on vision and creativity.  Congratulations Cindy on this wonderful honor.

 

LHS STUDENTS HAVE GOOD SHOWING AT 2010 SkillsUSA MISSOURI DISTRICT CONTEST
Liberty High School students that attend the Northland Career Center (Platte City) competed in the SkillsUSA Missouri Northwest District Contest on February 13.  Jessi Edgar took 2nd place in Commercial Baking Technical Information.  Jesse will be going to state competition in March!  Lauren Kroge took 4th place in Health Knowledge Bowl while Jasmine Mosby placed 3rd in Job Skills Demonstration.  SkillsUSA is a national organization serving trade, industrial, technical, and health occupations students in career centers, technical schools, public high schools, and two year colleges. 

 

BLUE JAY FOOTBALL PLAYERS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS

Liberty High School Football Seniors Garrett White and Garrett Ragland have received $1,000 scholarships from the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association (GKCFCA).  These scholarships were awarded for academic excellence and community involvement and went out to 22 seniors throughout the Kansas City Metro.

·         Poor relationships with classmates/difficulty making friends.

·         Lack of social skills

·         Making excuses to avoid attending school

·         Returning home with ripped clothing or looking messy

·         Frequently “losing” lunch money or other personal belongings

·         Rushing home to use the bathroom

If your child is displaying any of these symptoms, check with your child and their teacher to see what you can do to help.

Cyber Bullying can take different forms:

 

·         A threatening e-mail

·         Nasty instant messaging session

·         Repeated notes sent to the cell phone

·         A website set up to mock others
