Liberty elementary students raise money for animal shelter

LIBERTY, Mo. - Students and staff at Alexander Doniphan Elementary School proved spare change can add up quickly. In a week long fund-raiser that asked all to donate their spare pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars, the school raised more than $1,200 for the Liberty Animal Shelter.

The fund-raiser was organized by the 4th and 5th grade students in the Personalized Enrichment for the Advancement of Knowledge Program, better know as PEAK, as part of a service learning project. Students in these classes spent much of the year watching the news, reading the newspaper and talking with relatives to discover the needs of the community and the country. They then decided to focus their fund-raising efforts on a local project where they could make the most difference. According to their teacher Jan Johnson, “The students decided they would like to do something that would have an impact on their own community and also fit with their passion for animals.”

Once the project was decided, the students put all their energy into its success. They put up posters, made school wide announcements, wrote a letter home explaining the fund-raiser and gave up their recesses to count money. At the end of the week, the grand total was $1,233.16.

The money raised has been used to purchase 24 special beds for cats and dogs and an outdoor bulletin board to post information about lost and found animals. These gifts will be presented by the students on May 8 at 4:00 p.m. at the Liberty Animal Shelter (1501 Old 210 Highway).
